Supporting Sophie

21 Oct 2009

Whenever you get worried about what the future may hold, spend some time with our young people. They really are an inspiration, judged by the dedication and concern for others I have encountered at a local school.

I recently visited Whickham School where a great group of intelligent and interesting politics and history students put me through my paces on several topical issues.

Whilst there I was made aware of this year's Whickham School annual charity week which is taking place throughout this week.

Year 12 students choose a charity every year and then organise a week of events within the school to raise money for that charity. This year, under the leadership of co-chairs Jess Emmerson and Sarah Bilton with vice-chairs Lucy Zwolinska and Andrew Gallagher, they have decided to raise money for the Sophie Atay Appeal.

Sophie was born fit and healthy in November 2007 at the QE Hospital in Gateshead. At 16 months, however, she was diagnosed at a high risk stage of a rare and aggressive form of cancer called Neuroblastoma. Sadly, this cancer has survival rates as low as 20% but her family have found a hospital in New York where the chances of survival could soar to 80-90%.

But time is running out for Sophie. Money needs to be raised and it needs to be raised fast.

The students including have devised a wide variety of fund-raising ideas including a "Sing for Sophie" battle of the bands, tuck shops, car washes, T-shirt sales, a curry night and much, much more.

There is also an X Factor style competition running throughout the week with special guest, Big Brother's Charlie Drummond judging the final.

If you would like to get involved with the event or donate to the school's appeal email charityweek@whickhamschool.org or call Ms Cooper (Head of Year 12) on 0191 4960026 ext.213. Tickets for evening events are available from the school or go on-line for more information at whickhamschool.org

If I can help with any local campaign please do not hesitate to contact me at my office at St. Cuthbert's Church Hall, Shibdon Road Blaydon NE21 5PT, 0191 414 2488 or email me on andersonda@parliament.uk

My next open community surgery is in Sunniside at the Lounge Sun Hill Aged Persons' Unit from 9.30-11am on Saturday 24 October.
