Health in Young People

29 May 2009

Summer is here, in fits and starts. We all like a bit of sun but there is more and more evidence that too much of it is bad for our health with an increase in skin cancer.

There have also been several stories about young people being burned when using tanning machines.

It's therefore vital that the message about the dangers of too much exposure to the sun and tanning is conveyed to young people.

It's highly commendable, therefore, that pupils and teachers at Primary Schools in Whickham are shortly organising a Safe in the Sun week together with Fighting All Cancers Together, FACT.

I am a patron of this organisation which provides direct help and advice for cancer patients.

I understand that schools have taken up the challenge. For example, children at Whickham Parochial School will take part in an art competition, drawing a summer scene.

The school has managed to get two UV protective swimsuits donated as prizes, and will be adding other items such as beach bags.

I am very pleased to have been asked to judge the entries and present the prizes to the children on behalf of FACT.

I have also backed a Commons motion which calls for increased support for pupils with various illnesses. There are around a million children with health conditions such as asthma, cancer, coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, HIV, mental health problems, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell disease and conditions that can cause strokes.

My fear is that such children are at risk because they are not receiving sufficient support at school and that poor support at school stops children from fulfilling their potential.

While guidance on medicines in schools remains voluntary, inequality of experience will continue. Providing better support means that children with medical needs will have improved health outcomes and reduce the financial burden on the NHS.

I am involved with a range of community organisations across the Blaydon Constituency. If you would like to contact me in relation to a local voluntary, community group or charity please feel free to contact me.
