Here Comes Summer!

23 Jul 2008

The summer is traditionally a time to recharge our batteries and reflect. The focus of my thinking will mainly be how best we protect the more vulnerable and combine social justice with economic efficiency.

I believe that perhaps the only positive thing to come out of my government's rethink of the 10p tax band issue is that millions will get additional tax relief in the Autumn. But we should further improve the lot of the less well off. I would, therefore, be interested in your views on the idea that the better off should pay more tax.

I asked the House of Commons Library to estimate the additional revenues that could be raised if people on salaries of £100,000 a year or more were asked to pay a 50% tax. That wouldn't be on their whole wage but just the portion above £100,000 or £250,000 or £500,000. The Library says that between £2-8 billion could be raised by these options, depending on which rate is adopted.

Such revenues would take a fair contribution from the few for the benefit of the many.

They could, for instance, finance reductions in council tax which I know has a big impact on people on fixed incomes. Or they could also go towards ensuring that school pupils get a good start in life.

You may know that Gateshead Council is pioneering a trial period of free school meals for a week for all new starters at primary schools starting in September. I want central government to follow the Gateshead example and introduce free and decent school meals for all. It would cost money but the benefits are well-fed children who are more attentive and achieve more educationally. It also helps combat the enormously expensive issue of obesity.

I believe these sorts of actions are exactly in line with the core values of my party.

The summer recess doesn't mean that my work comes to a halt. I will use the break from Westminster to get around the constituency as much as possible. Please let me know if you'd like me to pop into a local event or discuss a success or a problem. My office number is 0191 414 2488. In the meantime, may I wish you all a good summer and a well deserved holiday.
